This drink literally says FALL. In all sorts of ways. Its a great drink for the middle of the day, before bed, or really anytime. If you like some of the basic things in life, like pumpkin spice and lattes and all that stuff, then you will LOVE this. If not, well, I still recommend it, because the health benefits are great. Enjoy!
Some nutritional notes about the ingredients - I recommend reading:
The combination of turmeric, coconut milk (aka the fat), and black pepper here are key. The way these three ingredients work together in your body make the combination in this drink vital because they make it easier for your body to soak up more of the benefits of each ingredient, specifically and most importantly, turmeric.
Combining turmeric and black pepper increases the bioavalability of curcuminoids (the anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-fungal, antioxidant component in turmeric) because of the peperine found in black pepper. Ultimately, nutrient absorption is increased due to the peperine when turmeric and black pepper are consumed together.
The combination of turmeric with a fat, such as the coconut milk in this recipe, also increases the absorption. Turmeric is a fat soluble root, which means that, when consumed with some sort of fat, it will be easier for your body to absorb and get the nutrients we want from turmeric.
Lastly, it is said that a small amount of heat can increase the activity of curcumin (again, the thing we want our body to absorb), but it can also really decrease the amount of curcumin in the turmeric as well if it is heated too much or too long. In this recipe, you will notice that I add the turmeric after the liquids and everything else is heated and blended. I did this because I found that the shorter the amount of time that the turmeric is in the hot liquid, the less potential the curcumin in the turmeric has a chance to be destroyed, the more activated it could become, and the more chances your body will absorb that curcumin you want. (This assumption is based off of research articles read.)
